Mind Windows: The Art of Roberto Rios celebrates more than 50 years of work by Roberto Rios. The first retrospective dedicated to this important artist, Mind Windows features work from his time as a founding member of Con Safo, a San Antonio-based group that helped to define the Chicano Art movement; through to his work as a well-known muralist and as a Medical Scientific Illustrator for publications produced by Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. On view at six locations throughout San Marcos, Texas between January and March 2023, the exhibition is a partnership between the Texas State Galleries at Texas State University, the San Marcos Art League, the Walkers’ Gallery, Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, the Price Center, and the San Marcos Public Library, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the San Marcos Arts Commission and the City of San Marcos. The Aquatica Showcase opening reception will take place on September 9th 2022 from 6pm-8pm at the San Marcos Art Center. The San Marcos Art League will be hosting its annual membership meeting at The Price Center on March 3rd 2022! San Marcos Art League members, non-members and artists are all invited to attend the meeting as well as the silent auction that will be hosted during the event.

We are asking artists and supporters to donate items to the silent auction. These donations can be in the form of art, gift cards, items for gift baskets or monetary donations. These donations will help support the future permanent home of the San Marcos Art Center. Help us find our forever home for our local gallery and community space for local artists!

Donations can be dropped off at the San Marcos Art Center (117 N. Guadalupe St. Suite 101) in Downtown San Marcos from February 1st through the 20th. Art Center hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11am-5pm; 10am-5pm on Saturdays.

A reception celebrating The Art of Bill Hutson will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Price Center in downtown San Marcos. The reception is part of a unique, 5-gallery, city-wide exhibition celebrating the work of the San Marcos born artist. The reception is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

We invite you to visit all five San Marcos galleries during the day on Saturday and then plan to join us for the reception. Enjoy wonderful art, great company, and speak with representatives from each gallery.

The San Marcos Art League (SMAL) is pleased to be bringing Art Scared back to the downtown Square on Saturday, Oct. 23.  The temporary Halloween public art installation is open to area children, Elementary-through-High-School-age. Participants are invited to paint a section of a designated window with a fall or Halloween-themed image. Painted windows will remain on display for the public to enjoy through early November.   

“Last year’s event was such a hit, we knew we wanted to do it again, said Nancy Brown, SMAL’s San Marcos Art Center Manager. “Our purpose remains two-fold,” she added. “First, to supplement the art curriculum for San Marcos area students, and second, to encourage further engagement in downtown San Marcos establishments.”

SMAL is joining forces with area schools, the Downtown Association of San Marcos (DASM), San Marcos Main Street, and several other generous sponsors including HEB, the Greater San Marcos Partnership, Mayor Jane Hughson, and the Price Center to bring the event back and provide appropriate supplies and prizes. First, Second, and Third Place Prizes will be awarded in each different school-age-level. All participants will receive acknowledgement and leave the event with a gift bag, extra paint supplies and brushes to create more art at home.

Approximately 60 window spaces have been identified at participating businesses around the Square. 20 spaces each will be grouped and allotted for elementary, middle, and high school students. Interested students and their parent or guardian should visit: https://bit.ly/ArtScared2021

Windows will be assigned to participating students to paint with the assistance of at least one parent or teacher on Saturday, October 23. Family-friendly imagery, mask-wearing, and safe social distancing practices will be observed, along with staggered painting times for elementary, middle, and high school students.
